How Many Sleeps Until Christmas?

Counting down the nights to Christmas morning

Sleeps until Christmas Counting from tonight to Christmas morning, December 25.

A "sleep" is one night in bed between now and Christmas morning. It is the way many families β€” especially in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand β€” count down with young children, because "three more sleeps" is far easier to picture than "three days, four hours and twelve minutes". The number above is worked out from the date on your own device, so it changes at midnight where you are.

How the sleeps are counted

The rule used here is simple: count every night from tonight up to and including Christmas Eve. Tonight is the first sleep; the night of December 24 is the last one. When you wake up after that final sleep, it is Christmas morning.

  • On Christmas Eve (December 24) there is 1 sleep left.
  • On December 23 there are 2 sleeps left.
  • On December 1, the day most Advent calendars begin, there are 24 sleeps left.
  • On Christmas Day itself the count is zero β€” and the next morning the countdown starts again for next year.

Counted this way, the number of sleeps is always the same as the number of calendar days on the main Christmas countdown. That is deliberate: both figures answer "how many times does the date have to change before it is December 25?"

Do you count today?

This is the question that causes most family arguments. If it is still daytime, tonight's sleep has not happened yet, so it counts. If someone asks at breakfast on December 22, the answer is three sleeps: the nights of the 22nd, 23rd and 24th. Some families prefer to count only the sleeps "after tonight", which gives a number one lower β€” that works too, as long as everyone in the house uses the same rule. What matters to a child is that the number goes down by exactly one every morning.

Ideas for counting sleeps with children

  • A paper chain. Make one link for every sleep shown above and tear one off each morning. Children can see the chain physically getting shorter.
  • A sleeps chart on the fridge. Write the numbers down from today's figure to 1 and cross one off at breakfast. Add a sticker on special days β€” the school play, the day the tree goes up, the day grandparents arrive.
  • An Advent calendar. From December 1 the calendar does the job for you: door 1 is opened with 24 sleeps to go, door 24 on Christmas Eve with one sleep left.
  • Bedtime ritual. Say the number at bedtime ("eleven more sleeps after this one") so the countdown becomes part of the night routine rather than a morning negotiation.

"Weekends" counts the Saturdays left before Christmas β€” a handy way to plan trips to see lights, visits to Santa or a day of baking. For a breakdown from any other date (or for a future year), use the days-until-Christmas calculator.

Milestone sleeps

These milestones fall on the same dates every year, because the months between September and December always have the same length:

Frequently asked questions

How many sleeps are there on Christmas Eve?

One. Christmas Eve night is the last sleep; you wake up on Christmas morning.

Is the number of sleeps the same as the number of days until Christmas?

Yes, with the counting rule used on this site. Tonight counts as a sleep, and the night of December 24 is the last one, so the total equals the calendar days left until December 25.

When does the sleeps countdown reset?

On December 26. On Christmas Day the count shows zero; from the next day it counts the sleeps until the following Christmas.

Does the count use my time zone?

Yes. The calculation runs in your browser using your device's date, so it changes at your local midnight.
