"How many days until Christmas break?" depends on one date only you know: your last day of school, college or work before the holidays. Enter it below and the countdown, the number of school or work days left and the weekends in between are calculated for you. Your date is saved only in this browser, so it is still there when you come back.
The typical date is the last Friday on or before December 22 — a common pattern, but check your own school or employer calendar.
"Days until Christmas break" counts to the first day of the break (the day after your last day). "School / work days left" counts Monday–Friday from today up to and including your last day; it does not know about teacher-training days, exam days or other closures, so subtract any that apply.
When does Christmas break usually start?
There is no single date — every school district, school board, university and employer sets its own. But the patterns are fairly predictable:
United States
Most K-12 school districts close for winter break for about two weeks, usually starting the weekend before Christmas week and returning in the first week of January. In 2026 Christmas Day falls on a Friday, so many districts finish on Friday, December 18 and return around January 4, 2027 — but some finish earlier in the week of December 21, and some start the break a few days before. Colleges typically end the fall term after final exams in mid-December, giving a longer break of three to five weeks.
United Kingdom and Ireland
Schools break up for the Christmas holidays on the last school day before Christmas week, usually a Friday, and have roughly two weeks off. Term dates are set by local authorities, academy trusts and individual schools, so neighbouring schools can differ by a day or two. University autumn terms generally end in mid-December.
Canada
Winter break for most school boards lasts two weeks, spanning Christmas and New Year's Day, with exact dates set by each provincial ministry or board.
Australia and New Zealand
Christmas falls during the long summer holidays. The school year ends in mid-to-late December and the new year starts in late January or early February, so the "Christmas break" is part of a holiday of about six weeks.
Christmas break at work
Many workplaces either close between Christmas and New Year or run with reduced staff. Public holidays decide the minimum:
- United States: Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year's Day are federal holidays. When December 25 falls on a Saturday the federal holiday is observed on Friday, December 24; when it falls on a Sunday, on Monday, December 26.
- United Kingdom: Christmas Day and Boxing Day (December 26) are bank holidays. In 2026 Boxing Day is a Saturday, so the substitute bank holiday is Monday, December 28.
- Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland: December 25 and 26 are public holidays (Ireland calls the 26th St Stephen's Day), with substitute days when they fall on a weekend; in Canada, Boxing Day's status varies by province.
To see how many weekdays remain before Christmas itself — ignoring your own break — use the days-until-Christmas calculator.
Making the last weeks before the break count
- Students: check exam and coursework deadlines against the countdown — the last week before the break is often the busiest.
- Parents: line up childcare for the days when schools are closed but workplaces are open, especially the days between Christmas and New Year.
- Workers: book leave early; the days around Christmas and New Year are the most requested of the year.
- Everyone: if you are travelling, the first Saturday of the break is usually one of the busiest travel days. See the planning timeline for when to book.
